The One That Got Away Short Story - 1641 Words
The one that got away Sitting on a cramped shelf, a book sits there, waiting to be read and remembered by someone. Unfortunately every person who passes by does not even give the gift of acknowledgment. Day after day the book losses more hope, with no will or effort to be read, collecting dust in its bindings. Alone, full of words and meaning ,a story with adventure and hope, the book grows old, while still keeping itsââ¬â¢ crisp youthfulness. For all the bookââ¬â¢s miraculous treasure held in the inside, itââ¬â¢s own emptiness and worry consumes it from back to cover. The worry and desire to be read is slowly consuming it, the book is anxious. ââ¬Å"Why wonââ¬â¢t anyone read me? What have I done toâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Tickled by the affection of being read, the book is full of joy as its anxiety slowly but surely settles down. The bookââ¬â¢s chest loosens up, unlike before when it had a tightness that would not go away , its happiness takes over the darkness that once consumed it,which is also a new experience for the book. Jessica was the opposite, still happy, but on a thrill ride that this book is taking her on, she couldnââ¬â¢t contain her excitement so her heart was pounding, and she was sure everyone in the book store could hear the thump thump thumping of her nervous heart. But no one could, every now and then though, the book could feel the girls racing heart in her hands as she held the bookââ¬â¢s sides firmly and protectively. Jessica was lost in a world more astonishing than one she was truly present in, the point of the story where she was reading at was the rising action. All the knights and kinsmen joined together to defeat the unlikely villain, the damsel in distress was not a person nor a damsel, giving a comic relief to the story.Jessica truly enjoyed that about the book, how unique and unfamiliar it was with plot twists here and there while predictability was sprinkled throughout this adventurous tale. Nearly at the middle of the book her peers who coldly ignored her before, strut towards her giving the bookstoreââ¬â¢s atmosphere an unwelcoming vibe. ââ¬Å"Whatcha got there?â⬠saidShow MoreRelatedLamb To The Slaughter Essay Conclusion841 Words à |à 4 PagesIn the short story Lamb to the Slaughter by Roald Dahl the husband that comes home early one day with bad news. Oryx and Crake Free Essays
Film Version of Oryx and Crake Jimmy- Joseph Gordon Levitt To play this role the actor would have to be very reserved at times but also very emotional at others. As well he has to be willing to take the backseat to Crake which I think Levitt would be willing to do. Levitt also has sex appeal which Jimmy shows throughout the novel. We will write a custom essay sample on Oryx and Crake or any similar topic only for you Order Now In 50/50 Levitt showed his incredible ability to show emotion in easy and tough times which would be perfect for Oryx and Crake. In the Dark Knight Rises Levitt plays the lesser role of Robin which shows the he is willing to play a role in the background. Snowman- Christian Bale For snowman it is important to be a grim figure, which shows through his face and emotion how depressing the situation he is in really is. Christian Bale visually would portray this very well because his facial hair can be very not kept which shows the struggle of the new world. In Batman Begins when he is training his image is not well kept and even the way he acts conveys the message that there is not a lot of hope which is perfect for this role. Crake- Ben Whishaw For this role it is crucial to be a very flat character and not show a lot of emotion. At the same time this type of character will tell quick jokes that not every gets, resulting in a quirky type of humor. Ben Whishaw would convey these character traits perfectly because of his natural facial expression and also with the type of roles he typically plays. He is a very skilled actor whoââ¬â¢s most recent movie is We Need To Talk About Kevin which is a suspenseful thriller, in this movie his character is very subdued and does not talk a lot with slight tweaking to some of the traits he showed in that movie he would be a perfect fit for Crake. Oryx- Brenda Song Oryx is a very mysterious character who is far from innocent but shows very closed minded tendencies as she does not like to acknowledge past traumatic experiences that she has faced in her life. This character would communicate with Oryx because she is an Asian actor like Oryx and she also has large sad eyes that you feel sad for which will complement the role nicely. Brenda Song acted in the Social Network where she has sexual relations with one of the characters which will prepare her for Oryxââ¬â¢s sexual role, but apart from that she acted decently in the Social Network and with the role of Oryx she does not have to show much emotion. Jimmyââ¬â¢s father- George Clooney Jimmyââ¬â¢s father has trouble connecting with his son but he is a very social and intelligent person. He is also a very sarcastic person and when he interacted with his wife it revealed that he is very quick to anger as well. George Clooney would represent these character traits fairly because of his rewarding career he can do just about anything, with his smile and straight hair it conveys that he is social and with certain outfit changes he can appear as intelligent. He is perfect for this role because of his character in the movie The Descendants where he plays the father in a dysfunctional family similar to the one in Oryx and Crake. This shows that he has played a similar role in his career and he would surely be up to the task. Sharon- Susan Sarandon Sharron is a very rebellious character in the novel, which at the same time shows her courageousness standing up to major Compounds to get a message across. She is the type of person that will not stop until the job is done. Susan Sarandon is perfect because she is confident and brave person who is a strong woman that will convey the character traits of Sharon. Since she is an older actor the role of mother fits perfectly with her because she is a nurturing person but because of the red hair of think of someone more rebellious. In her role in Thelma and Louise it shows that she is ready to play a more rebellious character, this is also proven in Rocky Horror Picture Show as this was a very controversial movie. Both these movies show that she can make brave decisions and is not afraid to be courageous like she has to be in this role of Sharon. This is a perfect role for this actor. The Horrific Treatment of Slaves and Toni Morrisons Beloved free essay sample
Haunting and ghosting is described as ideas of the past and the future, haunting, bleeding into the present. Two central tenants of this paradigm are one, all the horrific treatment of the slaves, being beaten, raped, over worked and living in inhabitable conditions amongst many other horrible things slaves had to endure. And two as a result of these hideous acts, the acts will literally haunt them in the present and in the future regardless if they have been freed from slavery. Although the red men have vanished from many of their haunts, their ghosts are everyhere. Nothing can be more natural, for the Indians were the only inhabitants of the land for countless generations. The rivers and the lakes were their friends, and they named them. Only some Of these have we replaced, the others we have taken over with Our country. CITATION carry 1033 (canon, 2006) This is explaining the haunting done to the Saskatchewan people when the aboriginal peoples land was being stolen and the owners of the land were being killed for it. We will write a custom essay sample on The Horrific Treatment of Slaves and Toni Morrisons Beloved or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Next in Sonny Williams Mac-Coy Wilson reading she elucidates how she was inspired to uncover what the notion of freedom really meant and means for black women to articulate how the bodies of black women to articulate how the bodies of black women articulate slavery. CITATION Songs II 1 033 (Mac-Coy- Wilson, 2007) She also parallels the hauntingly existing in Toni Morrison Beloved which focuses on black females in particular. In the book Seethe, a mother kills her own daughter known as Beloved, to protect her from the terrors of becoming a slave. Finally in Samara Sashs article hauntingly is explained in comparative ways including the house left standing in beloved, in the Middle Passage the ship has structural equivalent of Beloveds house. Though the structures arent entirely symmetrical, the slave ship was owned by the slave owners and the house left standing is owned by generations of former slaves. Wrapping the stories together, as being equally horrific conditions that slaves had to endure.Whether it was through the hauntingly of being stacked on a ship treated terribly, or living on a plantation being brutally beaten and treated in the most awful ways. Presented in the Gong case in Specters of the Atlantic, Gong Captain of the ship started to notice that many of the slaves he was transporting were beginning to suffer from malnutrition, reeking of disease because of the horrific conditions these over 400 African slaves were completely over crowded, stacked on top of one another and were beginning dying processes. The Captain made a decision, in his mind he thought was logical, to throw these sick Africans overboard instead of allowing these over 130 people to die on the ship where to him they are deemed worthless. Throwing them overboard would allow the Captain and ships owner to collect on insurance, and therefore replace any slaves they had lost. The case ended up in court and not for murder! But against the insured that would not pay on these claims. The whole situation for these African is completely unjust in so many ways in theory of value, exchange and singularity, its despicable! Specters of the Atlantic and the historical Margaret Garner is that in both cases some characteristics are the slaves are property which may be sold or passed along as an inherited at the asters discretion, and that the condition of slavery is transmitted from parent to child.Margaret Garner, when she and her family had decided to take advantage to escape enslavement and successfully made it to their first sto p to freedom they were ambushed by their master and Federal agents. Garner decided to try and take her childrens lives as well as her own with a result of only one of the children dying, to try and spare them from becoming enslaved again. She was not at first charged with murder of the child but was harder with trying to flee from enslavement. Garners attorney got the courts to agree on charging her with murder and in the interim she was sold to owners in Arkansas where Margaret was not able to be served with an arrest warrant because of different State Laws. She never was forced to her second trial and died only years later of a disease. Morrison defines remember throughout Beloved that portrays a memory that IS so awful its psychological effects to the victim it happened to that they literally relive the scenario to its entirety, over and over.Freeing yourself is one thing, claiming ownership of that freed self is another. I used to think it was my remember you know. Some things you forget. Other things you never do. But its not. Places, places are still there. If a house burns down, its gone, but the place- picture of it-stays, and not just in remember, but out there in the world. What remember is a picture floating around outside my head. Mean, even if I dont think it, even if die the picture of what I did, or knew or saw is still there. Right in the place where it happened.

How to Start a Book Report
How to Start a Book Report No matter what youre writing, be it the next great novel, an essay for school, or a book report, you have to capture your audiences attention with a great introduction. Most students will introduce the title of the book and its author, but theres so much more you can do. A strong introduction will help you engage your readers, hold their attention and explain what is coming up in the rest of your report. Giving your audience something to look forward to, and perhaps even creating a little mystery and excitement, can be great ways to make sure your readers stay engaged with your report. How do you do this? Check out these three simple steps: 1. Hook the Audience's Attention Think about what you experience in your daily life that captures your attention. The news and radio shows promo upcoming stories with a little teaser, often called a hook (because it hooks your attention). Corporations use snappy subject lines in emails and enticing headlines in social media to get you to open their messages; these are often called clickbait as they get the reader to click on the content. So how can you grab your readers attention? Start by writing a greatà introductory sentence. You may choose to begin by asking your reader a question to hook his or her interest. Or you may opt for a title that hints at the topic of your report with a dash of drama. Regardless of the way you choose to start a book report, the four strategies outlined here can help you write an engaging essay. Starting your book report with a question is a good way to grab your readers interest because youre addressing them directly. Consider the following sentences: Do you believe in happy endings?Have you ever felt like a total outsider?Do you love a good mystery? What would you do if you discovered a secret that changed everything? Most people have a ready answer for questions like these because they speak to common experiences we share. Its a means of creating empathy between the person reading your book report and the book itself. For example, consider this opening to a book report about The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton: Have you ever been judged by your appearance? In The Outsiders, S.E. Hinton gives readers a glimpse inside the tough exterior of a social outcast. Not everyones teenage years are as dramatic as those in Hintons coming-of-age novel. But everyone was once an adolescent, and odds are everyone had moments when they felt misunderstood or alone. Another idea to hook someones attention is, if youre discussing a book by a well-known or popular author, you might start with an interesting fact about the era when the author was alive and how it influenced his or her writing. For example: As a young child, Charles Dickens was forced to work in a shoe polish factory. In his novel, Hard Times, Dickens taps into his childhood experience to explore the evils of social injustice and hypocrisy. Not everyone has read Dickens, but many people have heard his name. By starting your book report with a fact, youre appealing to your readers curiosity. Similarly, you may choose an experience from the authorââ¬â¢s life that had an impact on his or her work.à 2. Summarize the Content and Provide Details A book report is meant to discuss the contents of the book at hand, and your introductory paragraph should give a little overview. This isnt the place to delve into details, but draw off your hook to share a little more information that is crucial to the storyline.à For example, sometimes, a novels setting is what makes it so powerful. To Kill a Mockingbird, the award-winning book by Harper Lee, takes place in a small town in Alabama during the Great Depression. The author draws on her own experiences in recalling a time when a small Southern towns sleepy exterior hid a vague sense of impending change. In this example, the reviewer might include a reference to the books setting and plot in that first paragraph: Set in the sleepy town of Maycomb, Alabama during the Depression, we learn about Scout Finch and her father, a prominent lawyer, as he desperately works to prove the innocence of a black man wrongly accused of rape. The controversial trial leads to some unexpected interactions and someà terrifying situations for the Finch Family. Authors make a deliberate choice when selecting the setting of a book. After all, the location and setting can set a very distinct mood.à 3. Make a Thesis Statement (if applicable) When writing a book report, you might also include your own interpretations of the subject matter. Ask your teacher how much personal interpretation he or she wants first, but assuming that some personal opinion is warranted, your introduction should include a thesis statement. This is where you present the reader with your own argumentà about the work. To write a strong thesis statement, which should be about one sentence, you might reflect on what the author was trying to achieve. Consider the theme and see if the book was written in such a way where you were able to determine it easily and if it made sense. As yourself a few questions: Was the book meant to be entertaining or informative? Did it accomplish that goal?Did the moral at the end make sense? Did you learn something?Did the book make you think about the topic at hand and assess your beliefs?à Once youve asked yourself these questions, and any other questions you may think of, see if these responses lead you to a thesis statement in which you assess the success of the novel. Sometimes, a thesis statement is widely shared, while others may be more controversial. In the example below, the thesis statement is one that few would dispute, ââ¬â¹and uses dialogue from the text to help illustrate the point.à Authors choose dialogue carefully, and a single phrase from a character can often represent both a major theme and your thesis. A well-chosen quote included in your book reports introduction can help you create a thesis statement that has a powerful impact on your readers, as in this example: At its heart, the novel To Kill A Mockingbird is a plea for tolerance in an atmosphere of intolerance, and is a statement on social justice. As theà characterà Atticus Finch tells his daughter, You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view...until you climb into his skin and walk around in it. Quoting Finch is effective because his words sum up the novels theme concisely and also appeal to the readers own sense of tolerance. Conclusion Dont worry if your first attempt at writing an introductory paragraph is less than perfect. Writing is an act of fine-tuning, and you may need several revisions. The idea is to start your book report by identifying your general theme so that you can move on to the body of your essay. After youve written the entire book report, you can (and should) return to the introduction to refine it. Creating an outline can help you best identify what you need in your introduction. Living on campus and living off campus Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Living on campus and living off campus - Essay Example Living on campus was really fun as I stayed in one of the best dormitories on campus. I had the opportunity of living with students in my class as some of them lived in my dormitory. I live far from campus due to the accommodation problems in the city and I do not have the opportunity of living close to my fellow colleagues. Life off campus was really good socially as I had the freedom to jive as I wanted to, which would not have been possible if I was still staying on campus. Living on campus really benefited my academics as I would easily interact with my lecturers and fellow students. When I was living on campus, we usually organized a discussion class, where we shared knowledge and ideas on some courses taught in class. This is not possible living off campus as there are no students around me, not to talk of organizing a discussion class. Now that I live off campus, I have to go to the campus when I need some vital materials for my course and this has not made my academic experience worthwhile. Living on campus has benefited me more academically than living off campus. Though, I now have privacy staying off campus as I know that there is nobody watching my steps, but the fact remains that there is distraction living off campus, which was not the case when I was living on campus. The primary aim of everybody that lived on campus was their academics, but students that lived off campus had different aims and motives. For me to achieve academic success living off campus, I have to wade off these distractions and concentrate more on my studies. I now have to deal with the problem of paying the bills of social utilities off campus as I was not bothered by these problems when I was living on campus. I would say from my experience that life off campus has been more interesting than life on campus and would want to go back to living on campus if I have the opportunity. But I have also

The Government of Finland and Spain Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
The Government of Finland and Spain - Case Study Example The two countries have some disparities in the accounting standards adopted. Moreover, the manner in which the International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS) are adopted by these countries differ greatly. The level of adoption of the International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS) in Spain is much slower than that of Finland. In Spain, a very strong legal culture persists where the administrative law is used to administer the public sector. The central government is the accounting regulator and any reforms in accounting standards. Any accounting standards that have to be incorporated in the countries accounting standards have to pass via a process of scrutiny according to Spanish laws. The adoption rate is also slow because the influence from accounting professionals is weaker compared Anglo-Saxon countries (Brusca, Isabel, Vicente, and Danny 440).Looking at Finland, it has a very fast adoption rate as compared to Spain. Finland customs and tradition ensure that th ere is a common law that provides for the diffusion of accounting standards in the country. During the period of New Public Management, the Finnish government was among the first countries to like this type of accounting in the public sector. Also in this era, the Finnish government began to adopt the accrual-based type of accounting (Oulasvirta 277). This accounting model was more based on historical costs. Stressing on the historical cost principle, Finnish government stated its resources at the amount, which the business was acquired.
